Are We Allowing People To Die From Salmonella And Other Bacteria Because Irradiation Is “scary”?

Irradiation doesn’t make food radioactive, just like an xray doesn’t make you radioactive. Most food, even that *not* labeled as irradiated, goes through several xray machines before it gets to our tables… This same radiation, at higher doses, from the same machines, could stop people from dying of these food borne illnesses.
Maybe I’m not scared of the word because I work in a cancer research facility, but isn’t it fear-not facts- that keeps us from using irradiation at least on peanut butter?
